My brother the playwright is working on some new songs and wanted to send them to me. (Such a nice guy!) Of course they were too big to send in email. I found a site called Transfer Big Files and it worked like a charm. No registration required. No weird software to download. Just fill in a form with an email address and upload your files. They make money from advertisements.
Sweet and simple.

I looked at the front page of the transferbigfiles and I'm already disliking for having to give it an email address. I'd much prefer to use dropbox's sharing or for something more transient, I've liked the drop.io model. You create a space to share files, optionally password protect, and set a TTL on the space (up to 1 year).
In case it wasn't clear because of the TLD, http://drop.io
Just tried drop.io. Pretty sweet too. I think for the novice TransferBigFiles.com is probably better since the novice is already thinking about sending the files to just a single person.
Thanks for the tip Pablo!
I've had good luck with YouSendit, especially where you want to send a file to multiple folks.
